The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".
